Decision Of Artist and Choice of Song For Music Video

I researched many websites searching for unsigned artists which fell under or close to the pop genre, using signed artists music meant that I dodged any fees or complications that might occur with using music which is owned by record labels. The top two websites that I felt were particulary good were http://www.unsigned.com/ and www.myspace.com/music. On the myspace music section of the website I looked through the unsigned artists charts. It would take very long to listen to every single song by every artist, so I decided to only listen to the songs which the most plays. I made a shortlist of three artists:

Elin - Move On (Pop)
Advantages
  • Catchy continuous beat - this means that the shots can be synchronised easily with the music.
  • Very mainstream - it sounds very similar to a britney or madonna song and so I could gain ideas from existing videos.
Disadvantages
  • Monotonous - the song seems to drag on at the same pitch throughout and is not very inspiring to create a video to.
  • Repetitive - the lyrics keep repeating, even though this is quite catchy it can get annoying.
The Colours - Tonight I Let You Go (Dance/Pop)
Advantages
  • Powerful lyrics - provides inspiration for creative imagery and interesting scenes.
Disadvantages
  • Similar to a lot of songs by other boybands - this means there is little room for doing making a music video which doesnt look similar to most videos out there.
Hiten - Falling Up Standing Down (Pop/Soul)
Advantages
  • The lead singer has very powerful voice - this captures the audiences attention as the singer puts a lot of effort in to the song.
  • Different to most songs - it has a very individual feel to most songs in the genre and makes you want to listen over and over again.
  • Lyrics provide room for imagery - the lyrics could be illustrated in the music video
Disadvantages
  • Beginning of the song could be hard to think of an opening to the video - this means time will have to be taken in to deciding how to properly start the music video.
I decided to go with the artist Hiten and his song Falling Up Standing Down, this is becaused I felt that this was the most innovative song, which allows me to be creative and produce something original in my music video. Still complying with the conventions of music videos, I feel I could create a production which would capture the attention of its viewers by giving them something slightly different to the majority style of music video.
