Final Music Video

Falling Up Standing Down Music Video Web Version from N Kumar on Vimeo.

Note: the uploaded web version of the music video seems to have some glitches and lip syncing issues due to the webserver. The DVD version, however, does not experience these issues and to get a better view of the music video it should be seen via DVD.

IMPORTANT Artist Information

My music video does not have a clear artist, instead it has signifier which the audience can relate with to identify the artist. The artist does not physically appear in the video this is because I wanted to trigger a sense of curiosity in the audience, I want them to want to wonder who the artist really is and leave them wanting more.

A similar effect can be seen with the band "Gorillaz" they are never actually seen in their music videos, instead cartoons are shown in their place. This leaves the audience wondering who real artists are and gives them a mysterious image, which I think works well for a new artist who wants attention without seeming to "scream" at their target audience.

This again has happened with the collection of books "A series of unfortunate events" the author "Lemony Snicket" is not actually Lemony Snicket, that infact is a code name to cover the real authors identity. This "cover up" was made known to the public purposely so that it would stir them in to a frenzy, everyone wanted to know who the real author was and there were competitions, hints and clues on the authors website. This is a method of attracting fans which could be used with my artist, creating a mysterious atmosphere will lead them on to want more and more of the artist.

Similar Music Videos

The beginning of Cee Lo Greens video "Forget You" poses some similarities to my music video as a young child is singing the part of a man. His part is to represent the older mans problems but on a smaller scale similar to the child in my music video.

This video creates a similar atmosphere to the older actor in my video, the way the man tries to get the girls attention by doing a dance and by offering gifts and still getting constant rejection.

My Brand

To create a brand identity I had to use reoccurring objects and messages to deliver the viewers an image of the artist not just as a singer but as a whole brand.

Editing

The choice of software for this project to edit the footage was Adobe Premiere Pro CS3, this is software was available at my house and so it meant I could work on the project directly from home.

The method used to get the lip syncing correct was to lay down the whole song as a foundation to base and align all the clips to the song. The first step obtain the correct section of the footage which made up that specific scene then align the lips with the song lyrics. As the song was playing in the background during filming and the singer was singing along with the lyrics, it was not too difficult to align the words with the lips.

Lip Sync Example from N Kumar on Vimeo.

It was hard in one section of the music video to align the lyrics with the singers lips where the same footage was taken and reused in a section further on in the video. This was possible because the singer is actually saying the same lyrics as before and so in theory the lip syncing should be the same.

This was not the case, there was a slight problem because even though the singer was singing the same lyrics, the length of the words and the tone was somewhat different to the earlier footage. Instead of re-filming that particular section, I simply adjusted the clip to fit in to the new setting, this may include splitting up the clip or merging it with other clips.

I decided not to re-film for continuity purposes, it would be hard to exactly recreate the whole setting for that particular section and therefore leading to inadequacy in the relation between the music videos scenes and that new re-filmed scene. It would stick out quite obviously.

Decision of Audience Perception

The music video is going to be made up of two parts; the young singer and the older actors narrative. The two sections will have to be linked, to do this the original idea was to have physical illustration of the artists lyrics so that when the singer sings about a certain object the actor would be seen doing the act.

However, this is very usual in a music video, I want to keep to most of the conventions of a music video but do something different which projects the "alternative" image that I want the artist to reflect. This is because the music is not completely mainstream and to keep the homegrown feel I would need to do something slightly different. This was also the reasoning behind using the young singer.

Solutions: I came up with a few solutions, they all generally pointed to one underlying theme - to have the actor represent an older version of the younger singer. This would work well but I did not want to make anything seem too obvious instead, I wanted to produce something which the viewer questions and still keeps the mysterious edge to the video.

Decision: The final decision was to have the singer and actor wear similar clothing, this way the audience could distinguish a similarity between the two characters. There will also need to be an object which links the two characters to reinforce the link, this would be the rabbit teddy.

However, to contain a sense of "mystery" I did not want to make it too clear what the link was between the two characters, instead I wanted the audience to raise questions about the video and for their reaction to leave them wanting more.

There could be a few interpretations such as the actor being an older version of the young singer, the older actor being the same person as the young singer but in the future or that they are just different people. This I want to leave up to the audience to decide for themselves, this way the whole video edges away from the everyday music video that most people could produce.

Filming - Part Two

Set Up
The second part of my filming involved four actors, this section made up the narrative part of the music video. I had to make sure the whole set was organised correctly, the more people and actors on set whilst filming can make it difficult to focus on the task at hand, however, once everyone has been organised and briefed they can prove to be very helpful on set.

This time round the storyboards played a bigger part than in the last filming process, I needed to have them ready so that I could follow along as I filmed and so that I covered each aspect of the narrative.

In this section I wanted to reflect the lyrics in the song, so that the audience have a visual representation of what they are hearing in a comical and light-hearted manner. I also wanted to created a distinction between the young singer and the older actor, the young singer could be seen as a younger representation of the older actor. The actor, however,  is someone that the audience will find an amusing character as he try to charm a girl.

Filming
The process ran much more smoothly than I first thought it was going to be, I imagined filming the short narrative to become very stressful as shots were missed or the actors were not moving as directed.

The actual filming was very consistent, I planned out what I wanted to film and how I wanted to do it and by following the storyboards as I filmed I made sure that each shot was filmed in order so not to get confused. However, to simplify the process the outside shots were all shot together outside and the inside shots were all done together at the same time. This saved time and meant I didn't have to keep moving the camera and tripod in and out of the house.

The narrative had to be followed along whilst the filming took place, this helped to make sure the shots were synchronized with the storyline making the editing process a lot easier.

The same rules applied to this filming process as the last, two good shots of each scene where taken this ensured that there was enough footage to edit.

Lighting became another issue as the camera did not produce high quality footage the lighting became dull in areas. Also, even though the camera was set to automatic focus, it would move in and out of focus in areas during a take. This meant that some scenes took three or four takes to get right.

Example of Filming #2 from N Kumar on Vimeo.

Filming - Part One

Set up
My filming has been split up in to two sections, my first filming stage involves the young singer and is set at a house location. The lighting was a very important part of the filming and I had to make sure I got the right proportions to create a lighthearted atmosphere with  certain aspects of "seriousness" - these were highlighted by the darker areas of the set.

As I am working on my own in this task I asked for a few friends to help me out around the set, for example to follow along with the storyboards to check I was filming the correct shot at the right angle and to stop and start the music as I needed.  This allowed me to be more organised meaning I had more concentration on the actual filming and directing process.

Filming
I was very specific with my filming, I wanted to capture the innocence in the young singer and make sure the audience sympathise with the images in front of them. By using a range of angles, maybe some that a lot of others may have not included in their video. I would say that the lip syncing process was very difficult at first, I found it hard to get the expression in the characters face because he was miming the lyrics a Capella trying to replicate the music after he listened to it. This did not work and so I came up with a solution:

Lip Syncing Problem - It was very hard to sync the characters lips with the lyrics of the singer as he did not know the precise timings.

Lip Syncing Solution - I played the music whilst filming and had the character "sing" out loud along with the music as it played along, this helped sync the lips in time with the music and added the expression I was looking for in the characters face. This also helped the character to feel more relaxed as with the music playing loudly in the background you were unable to hear his actual "singing" and so he didn't feel as nervous.

I made myself a set of rules to follow whilst filming, bearing the editing process in mind, I had to ensure that I had the correct type and the right amount of footage to work with, I strictly followed along this filming rule as it involved every shot that I took:

My Filming Rule - Take at least TWO good shots that could be used

I kept the amount of people on set in the first part of the filming process to the bare minimum that I needed, I had the actor and one other person to help out with small jobs and lighting. This is because the lip syncing process can become very stressful if it doesn't go to plan and with lots of people to organise on top of that can make it impossible to create workable footage. With the minimum amount of people possible on set at this time I was able to concentrate on organising two people, the helper and the young singer and also on filming and directing.

Outcome
The footage to come out of this filming was of a workable standard, the next process was to create a small draft version involving only the singer so I could see how well the lip syncing went and could visually see the blanks where the next piece of footage would slot in to.

The camera made the quality of the footage a lower quality than I hoped. It also meant that the lighting did not come out as well as it should of done, with a camera that produced higher quality footage I feel the music video would have been of a much higher standard.

This was the outcome of my first rough draft attempt at editing the footage:

FUSD Test 1 from N Kumar on Vimeo.

 Points to Improve On:
  • Lip Syncing - The words are not with the lips and the sound does not completely match the scenes.
  • Shot Cuts - The shots are not exactly as they should be but as this is a rough draft this is expected.
This rough draft helped me develop my lip syncing skills and produce this draft with all of the shots of the young singer - the blanks are where the next bit of footage could go:

FUSD - Test 2 - Mixture of new footage and test footage from N Kumar on Vimeo.

Now I am ready to move on to the next filming process, producing rough drafts as I go along help me develop the music video through the stages and make sure I keep the editing process in mind whilst filming.

Choice of Location

Storyboards 3rd Draft - Change of Ideas

My initial ideas were to have a singer and an actor, who seem fairly similar, and have a simple overlaying narrative throughout the whole video with clips of the singer singing certain lines and verses. This idea is still put in to practice, however I wanted the singer to play a more important role in the video. This is so that the audience have a memorable character, making branding and creating the image that the viewers percieve of the singer much easier to portray.

In my third draft version of storyboards I decided to make a change which would affect the whole filming process. Instead of using a generic singer to sing the verses, I decided to use a child as the main singer prefererably of around 10 years old. This creates and innovative music video which is highly recognisable and could even be turned in to a brand.

It allows the video to show contrast between the younger character (singer) and the older character (actor) and the younger character could be interpreted as a younger version of the actor but still speaking from the older characters perspective. This adds deeper meaning to the video and also encourages the audience to remember the video.

Storyboards 2nd Draft

I have uploaded the second draft of my storyboard, my initial first draft was very rough and did not come out clear on the computer. Changes to the storyboard include the addition of the singer in certain scenes, the first draft didn't include any shots of the singer and only contained narrative. This will serve as a "working progress" until my final draft is completed, this is when all my ideas have been thought through properly and positioned correctly. The story boarding process has helped me develop my ideas and understand correctly how I should film and direct the filming and editing process. The scenes slowly come together to form a working version as each draft progresses.

Communication With The Artist

I emailed the artist I chose for my music video project and was successful in gaining permission to use his music in the video. A copy of the email conversation is shown below:

Lil Wayne Website

In these videos I have included a quick tour of the website of each Artist/Band chosen and then I go on to analyse the website, picking out specific aspects.

(Apologies for the low quality video, Yahoo hosting reduced the quality significantly and I have tried my best to try and increase the quality of the footage so it is watchable.)

Lesson on Evaluating Camera Angles in Music Videos

In todays media lesson we analysed a number of music videos, focusing mainly on camera angles. I learnt that when focusing on a scene it is a good technique to use a variety of camera angles showing the same subject matter.

Intial Ideas For Music Video

The song I chose is not a song which I could imagine going mainstream, so I do not want to make a mainstream music video. My first ideas were of having a desperate guy offering a girl some flowers, then getting rejected, the next day he goes to offer her some chocolates then gets rejected. I was thinking of showing quick clips of the same location, same scenario execept with the present that the guy offers the girl changing each time.

Further research in to finding the right location needs to be carried out, my first thoughts would include either a school location, a girls doorstep or in a busy town scene. Investigation in to these places will need to be carried out so that I can move forward with my planning.

Advert - The Vines

This advert has a lot of vines surrounding the band name, this is showing a visual representation of the name and also backing up the album cover as the image seems to be taken from the front cover so people can make the link and the band will gain recognition. They have used the same fonts, this again shows continuity.

The record label advertises the label, this is so that if the consumer likes this band, they are likely to enjoy similar music on the record label, so this promotes themselves as well as the band.

It shows essential information e.g. when the album is out. The colour green is predominant throughout the whole advert, this reflects the name and represents the band as being fresh, new and organic. The white background helps the images to stand out.

They have tried to appeal to the audience by including "the hit singles" in the advert, showing that its popular, usually people think that if its a popular song then they are likely to like it as well. They have included a variety of ways to listen to it, on CD and by downloading.

The angle of the advert makes it eye catching, reflecting the shape of vines unlike the normal flat view which people are evolving to ignore. Most of the images are quite smooth and flowing, the only linear things are the writing so that people can read it clearly and always it helps it stand out. The advert is very simple, at first glance people gain the essential information that the artist wants to present.

Adverts - Gwen Stefani

The advert looks like it is a painted portrait of her, the crown and the jewels show her in the same light as someone rich and famous like a queen. The picture is portraying her as an icon by showing her as a painting because in old times, this is what rich people would of had done, especially as she is in a high chair.

The advert picture is the same as the album cover and a small version of the album cover is shown in the bottom left hand corner. Also the writing is the same as the album cover, this is showing continuity between the advert and the album, giving the consumer something by which they can recognise the artist. The writing is written in an old english style this reflects the connotation of her being a queen, also it looks like a gold plaque, this shows riches and fortune.

The record label is written in a completely different font and is in a different colour, this makes it stand out from the rest of the advert and so is easily seen.

Types of Music Video - Performance Based

Auditory Leading - This is where the main focus of the music is based around the artist/band and them performing the song.

The Kooks - Always Where I Need To Be

These music videos are both focused on the bands performing their own songs, in the Kooks video you see the main singer with a microphone and the rest of the band playing their instruments this is the stereotypical image that comes to mind when we think of a band and by fulfilling these characteristics the audience already knows what they expect from the video. The Kooks start off in one place performing the song, which is broken up by clips of random videos of the band. They then move to other locations still carrying the characteristics of a band, the main singer is the main feature of the majority of the whole video.

Guns N' Roses video differs slightly from the Kooks, theirs is still performance based but it it set at an actual concert and is based in front of a live audience. A lot of the footage is from live performances which have been edited together to form the whole video. The lead singer is still the main focus of majority of the video, but it also includes a lot of footage of the crowds, this not only shows their fan base but also promotes the atmosphere at the concerts. Bands like Guns N' Roses are known for their concerts and tours, promotion through the music video could be a way for people who have never experienced one of their concerts to have a sneak preview and maybe encourage sales of the next event.

What Makes an Effective Album Cover

Album covers are not just there to protect the disc inside the case, but to also promote the artist to the customer, they can do this in a number of ways from being eye catching to doing something different to the majority.

There has to be an overall theme which matches the video and the album cover, this continuity means that the consumer knows one product is linked to the other and so is able to spot the characteristics of their favourite artist as the way the products are marketed will link back to the artists themselves.

The text has to be clear, this is so people can read what they are buying and also so they can quickly identify the album they are looking for. The colours on the cover have to reflect the artist and be relevant to the music, for example Miley Cyrus fans are unlikely to buy something that looks dark and dismal, they are more than likely looking for something bright and colourful.

Another important factor is that the album cover and the advert has to link to the music video, this again develops continuity by which the target audience can familiarise themselves with.

Decision Of Artist and Choice of Song For Music Video

I researched many websites searching for unsigned artists which fell under or close to the pop genre, using signed artists music meant that I dodged any fees or complications that might occur with using music which is owned by record labels. The top two websites that I felt were particulary good were http://www.unsigned.com/ and www.myspace.com/music. On the myspace music section of the website I looked through the unsigned artists charts. It would take very long to listen to every single song by every artist, so I decided to only listen to the songs which the most plays. I made a shortlist of three artists:

Elin - Move On (Pop)
Advantages
  • Catchy continuous beat - this means that the shots can be synchronised easily with the music.
  • Very mainstream - it sounds very similar to a britney or madonna song and so I could gain ideas from existing videos.
Disadvantages
  • Monotonous - the song seems to drag on at the same pitch throughout and is not very inspiring to create a video to.
  • Repetitive - the lyrics keep repeating, even though this is quite catchy it can get annoying.
The Colours - Tonight I Let You Go (Dance/Pop)
Advantages
  • Powerful lyrics - provides inspiration for creative imagery and interesting scenes.
Disadvantages
  • Similar to a lot of songs by other boybands - this means there is little room for doing making a music video which doesnt look similar to most videos out there.
Hiten - Falling Up Standing Down (Pop/Soul)
Advantages
  • The lead singer has very powerful voice - this captures the audiences attention as the singer puts a lot of effort in to the song.
  • Different to most songs - it has a very individual feel to most songs in the genre and makes you want to listen over and over again.
  • Lyrics provide room for imagery - the lyrics could be illustrated in the music video
Disadvantages
  • Beginning of the song could be hard to think of an opening to the video - this means time will have to be taken in to deciding how to properly start the music video.
I decided to go with the artist Hiten and his song Falling Up Standing Down, this is becaused I felt that this was the most innovative song, which allows me to be creative and produce something original in my music video. Still complying with the conventions of music videos, I feel I could create a production which would capture the attention of its viewers by giving them something slightly different to the majority style of music video.

Critical Perspectives in media - Post Modernism in TV + Media

Goodwins Theory
Andrew Goodwin consists...
Relationship between music and visuals
A particular music genre may have their own video style and icongraphy
There is demand for lots of close ups of the artist
The artist may develop their own star iconography (in and out of their videos) which becomes a part of overall image
There may be reference to voyeurism (treatment of women, also in terms of systems of looking)
There is likely to be inter-textual references either to other music videos or to films and TV texts.

Branding

The band Kiss have released a substantial amount of branding, being one of the biggest rock bands in the world they have grabbed peoples attention with their music and their unusual face paint. As a rock band they are always going to have that rebellious image, by branding on lighters they are promoting that rebellious image. This makes them seem "cool" in the eyes of their fans.
Joy Division

Joy Division have created a very popular brand, their trademark as seen on the right, has been turned in to posters, t-shirts and even shoe soles. This merchandising has meant that the band spreads awareness and boosts sales at the same time. It seems abstract but has become a faishonable accessorie. Even in recent times the bands logo is coming back in to designs as people are looking in to the past for their faishon and as people are going for the "retro" look.

Branding can be used in a different light, rather than a specific logo or picture that represents the band the artist will have a theme or colour scheme which reflects them and the image they want to portray to their audience. Katy Perry has created a very "girly girl" image, which can be described as Pop Sugar, she uses many references to sweets or "candy" this gives her a powerful image which captures her consumer. She has been quite successful as her distinctive look means that people can easily recognise.

When creating my own music video I will have to focus carefully on my own branding and how the audience will interpret the style of the video. This will mean that I will have to think carefully about characters costumes, colours in the scenes and style of imagery shown.

Popular Inspirational Artists - Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga Before She Was Famous
Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta better known by her stage name "Lady Gaga" is a singer/songwriter. Her music is based around the pop/dance genre and has a very futuristic feel to it, it can be argued that her music can be compared with a lot of other artists out there such as the likes of "Ke$ha" however it is Lady Gagas image which sets her apart and makes her an inspirational artist. She started out as a songwriter until the artist Akon recognised her musical talent and signed her to his own label.

Before she was famous, she had different colour hair and a whole different image, the footage below gives you an example of what her style used to be like:

As a result of a mass-marketing campaign she is now one of the most famous pop artists out there. Her image was created as a part of that campaign, she is known for her eccentric fashion, mystifying music videos and extreme outfits. In one of her videos she wears a hate made from telephones and puts diet coke cans in her hair. Lady gagas stage name also is trying to identify that shes crazy and individual, the definition of gaga being "Silly, Crazy, Completely absorbed, Infatuated, or Excited". The lyrics from the song Bad Romance can be said to be almost abstract to the everyday listener "Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah! Rom-mah-rom-mum-mah! GaGa-oo-la-la!", her music videos are inspirational to media students as they carry an individual tone and sets Lady Gaga apart from other artists in the same genre.

I could use Lady Gagas idea of becoming so different from other artists to promote my own album, by making sure the album is seen as completely new and innovative people will be naturally drawn to it to see what it is all about. However, this can sometimes give an adverse affect on the audience, sometimes its "hate it or love it" with the viewers.
